In adhesives, kaolins can serve as simple fillers, or be reactive or functional. Air floated and water washed kaolins are lower cost while also improving rheology. These products are usually chosen based on economics first, then working through other considerations such as brightness, particle size, pH, and other characteristics to develop a decision. Calcined and surface modified or treated kaolins are viable clay choices for when moisture-sensitivity or improved reinforcement are desired.
